When you get a new piece of Musical Gear... Be it hardware, software, rack-mount, stomp box, and so on... Put away the instructions aside from the set-up and throw the troubleshoot guide into the trash... Accidents and ignorance creates beautiful mistakes... (Jaco Pastorius : 1951 - 1987)

Lee Ritenour - The Very Best of Lee Ritenour

"The Very Best of Lee Ritenour" out in early summer 2003 ! Lee is also recording a new duet album later this year. "asik.. asik.. ga cuma album 'the best' doangan... huhuy..."

Anyway, Lee Ritenour transcends categories. One of contemporary music's most celebrated performers, the guitarist continues to be a mainstay in the worlds of pop, funk, fusion, Braziliana, and of course jazz.

Driven by these diverse yet, for Lee, naturally dovetailing inspirations, the teenage tyro played his first big time session with The Mama's & the Papas at the age of 16. Two years later, Lee was lifting bandstands with Tony Bennett and Lena Horne. Whole pursuing his studies, which included lessons with Joe Pass and Howard Roberts, Lee rose rapidly through the ranks of L.A.'s highly competitive music scene. In 1973, he traveled extensively with Sergio Mendes and Brazil'77.

Significantly, he was also helping forge a new musical genre with fellow fusion stars-to-be David Sanborn, Grover Washington, Jr., Larry Carlton and Tom Scott in the pressure cooked jams at The Baked Potato in North Hollywood. At the same time, Lee's stylistic breadth and sight-reading abilities led to an increasingly busy schedule working on Hollywood's top sound stages. Whatever the setting, whether on the road or in the studio, everyone in the business soon knew that when Lee was on board, the music was bound to be first-class.

In 1976, Lee's solo career was launched with First Course. Since then, while exploring a variety of styles and grooves, he's enjoyed a broad and ever growing fan base with an approach at once accessible and artistic. Lee's universal appeal starts with his resonant signature sound. It's mellow, and it sings and soars, even on bop pish romps like the turbo-charged "4 on 6." Then, there's his fluid phrasing. And his adroit use of space. Instead of nonstop multi-noted effusions, his playing breathes. Lee, of course, has a ton of technique. but when he uses it, it serves larger designs. Eschewing athletic displays, Lee lets each note, phrase, and chorus tell a story. His use of electronics is likewise subtle, supplementing rather than dominating. Add when he arrives at the studio, it's with a battery of electric and acoustic guitars with each instrument bringing a set of unique colors perfectly matched to the tune and setting at hand.

Because his music is open and breathes deeply, it invites us in. In the process, we too, participate by adding our own moods, emotions, and stories. As a result, in the lines like Lee's Wes Montgomery-inflected "A Little Bumpin'," his "soundtrack" evokes imagery rich in fantasy and dreams.

Throughout this collection, one is impressed by Lee's disciplined virtuosity, the clarity of his compositions, and his effective production designs. These, too, help explain his widespread appeal. I'm equally taken with the hooks that by subtly altering the flow, momentarily break our trance-like relationship with the music's dominant mood, thus helping us to appreciate it from yet other perspectives.

At the center, of course, is Lee Ritenour, guitarist extraordinaire, the veritable straw stirring the drinks. So whether you're a long-standing fan or a newcomer, sit back and enjoy. It's Ritenour Time !
